Ms Patricia Lovett (CLAS)
One thousand years of writing manuscripts
Half day - from 2.00pm
Venue: Room NG15, Ground Floor, Senate House North block
How were the scripts written in historical manuscripts? Is it difficult to cut a quill and how long would it last? What differences did changes of nib angle of the quill make? How did Caroline Minuscule and English Caroline Minuscule differ when written by a scribe? Are vellum and parchment the same? These practical matters and others relating to letter-forms will be addressed by professional scribe Patricia Lovett, who, using slides and hand-outs will follow through the various writing styles in historical sequence from Uncials in the sixth century to Cancelleresca in the sixteenth century.
