In Association with The British Library and
the European Studies Research Institute, University of Salford
8-9 November 2001
Thomas James Wise (1859-1937) was a distinguished bibliophile and bibliographer, bookseller and scholar, advisor to libraries and bookcollectors, and creator of the Ashley Library. He was also a forger and a sophisticator, whose expert knowledge gave him access to markets, collectors, libraries and the confidence of others, access he used for both legitimate and criminal purposes.
This conference seeks to explore the work of Wise, the consequences of his activities, and the larger implications of his career for the history of the book, for collecting and curatorship, for cultural assumptions about authenticity, collecting and expertise, and for fakes, their deceptions and their implications.
Proposals are welcome for papers both directly on Wise's activities and on the larger implications of his career for books and scholarship.
Topics welcome amongst others include: Wise as bibliophile and bibliographer - Wise and collecting - Wise and the book market - The Nature of Certain XIXth Century Pamphlets - the cultural implications of collecting and selling - the cultural implications of forging or sophisticating books - academic knowledge and academic confidence.
