ESSE-8 Seminar Programme

Further Guidelines for ESSE-8 Seminar Convenors
The deadline for receipt of seminar papers has passed. Seminar Convenors should read the following paragraphs carefully for guidelines on procedure in the run-up to the ESSE Conference.

1. Convenors and Participants
Seminar convenors must select a maximum of six participants among the proposers of seminar papers. Proposers should be advised of the outcome by 20 March.

Seminar convenors must ask participants (a) to present their papers as 4-page abstracts if they have not already done so, (b) to provide 100-word summaries of the abstracts to be published on the Conference website, and (c) to advise participants to register for the Conference.

Seminar convenors must forward the 100-word summaries, along with each participant's contact details (including email), to the ESSE-8 Conference Administrator by 31 March.

Seminar convenors must circulate the chosen abstracts among the participants at least two months before the Conference, and invite each participant to act as respondent to one abstract.

NB: Seminar convenors must maintain close contact with their co-convenors and participants, and inform the Conference Administrator of any cancellations, changes to seminar personnel, or amendments to abstract summaries.

2. Scheduling
A draft schedule for the Conference will be circulated shortly. Although we will make every effort to avoid clashes of interest across parallel sessions, it will not be possible to accommodate all individual scheduling requests. Seminar convenors should communicate any requests to do with times and dates of sessions or the avoidance of potential clashes to the Conference Administrator by 31 March.

The Programme is extremely tight for ESSE-8, and only in the most exceptional circumstances will it be possible to consider a second session for those seminars in receipt of a large number of excellent proposals. Seminar convenors wishing to apply for a second session must put their case in writing to the Academic Programme Committee, via the Conference Administrator, by 31 March.

If for any reason you are forced to withdraw your seminar from the Conference please let the Conference Administrator know by 31 March.

3. Rooms, Equipment and Computers
Seminar convenors must communicate any requests for audio-visual equipment and other room specifications to the Conference Administrator by 31 March.

Our rooms will be offered in lecture/theatre style with rows of chairs facing a top table. Those intending to make short computer presentations must bring their own laptops if possible; anyone bringing a MAC computer must also bring a VGA adapter. NB: if you are intending to use a computer please let the Conference Administrator know by 31 March.

4. Registration
Seminar convenors, co-convenors and participants must register for the Conference no later than 1 June. After that date the higher conference fee will be payable. The Registration Form may be downloaded from the website: www.sas.ac.uk/ies/esse8 . Please note that neither the University of London, nor the Council for College and University English, nor ESSE can accept liability for expenses incurred by convenors, co-convenors or those invited to participate in Panels, Seminars and Special Events.

Please note that Conference registration fees are charged for the full five days. There is no daily rate.

5. At the Conference
Each seminar will be limited to a single two-hour session. Each participant will be given 5 minutes to summarise his/her abstract. The respondent will be given 5 minutes to initiate debate. NB: Neither will be allowed to read a paper. Knowledge of the abstracts by the participants should facilitate discussion with the active participation of the floor.
