To all ESSE-8 Delegates

The Institute of English Studies is making final preparations for the ESSE Conference and we greatly look forward to welcoming you to London . Most of the information you will need is in the Conference Programme which you will receive upon registration. We draw your attention especially to the material at the back of that volume concerning personal security and safety.
Please also note that there will be a brief regular weekly test of the fire alarms on Thursday morning, 31 August, at 9.30 am, which should not disturb conference proceedings.

The following extra information addresses the arrangements for registration and for the larger gatherings of the Conference.

Location
The Conference is held in Senate House (and the adjoining Stewart House), which can be approached from either Malet Street or Russell Square, WC1. The closest Underground stations are Russell Square (Piccadilly line, offering direct access to and from Heathrow), Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road (both Northern Line). A map of the area is included in the Conference packs, but for your advance journey plans, kindly see http://ies.sas.ac.uk/about/findus.htm

Registration
Registration will open at 9.30 am on Tuesday 29th August at the Senate House South Block reception desk. (You are reminded that Monday 28th August is a Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom and that apart from special arrangements in place for the ESSE Board, the Senate House will be closed on that day.) You will be given a conference pack and a name badge which we do ask that you wear at all times. The name badge is the means by which you will secure entry to all Conference events, so kindly ensure that you have registered in Senate House before proceeding to the Opening Reception. The Registration/Information Desk will remain open throughout the conference to greet those arriving after Tuesday 29th.

Opening Reception
The Opening Reception for delegates (and distinguished guests) will be held in the British Museum on 29 August from 6.45 - 8.30 pm, when the British Museum will be closed to members of the general public. Entry to the Reception is via the North Door of the British Museum, immediately opposite Senate House in Montague Place. You are advised that luggage should be deposited at your hotel/hall of residence before you proceed to the British Museum.

Plenary Event and Reception
The Plenary Event (A. S. Byatt and Cees Nooteboom in conversation) takes place in the Beveridge Hall on 30 August at 5.00pm. Seats will be provided on a first come/first served basis. Overflow space is provided in the Chancellor's Hall where there will be a video link and a large screen. The Reception to follow will occupy the full social space of the Conference on the ground and first floors of Senate House, between these two rooms.

Launch of the European Journal of English Studies
Tickets for the Launch of The European Journal of English Studies (to take place on the evening of Thursday 31 August) are available upon request from the registration desk.

Poetry Reading
For catering purposes it would be helpful for us to have an indication of the numbers likely to attend the Poetry Reading on Friday 1 September at 7.15pm, and you will be asked to indicate a preference on registration.

Local Refectories , Sandwich Bars, Restaurants, Supermarket and other Shops
There is a list of such amenities in the back of the Conference programme. It is far from exhaustive, but offers a range of suggestions within easy walking distance. Kindly note that delegates should make their own arrangements for lunches, and that the London Review of Books Bookshop in Bury Place will be offering wine and cheese during every lunch hour of the conference, for badge holders only!

Library
You are welcome to visit the Senate House Library during the Conference. Please take the main lifts to the fourth floor. If you show your name badge to the staff on the front desk immediately opposite the lifts, you will be issued with a day pass.

Building Works
The Institute would ask delegates to appreciate that a £47m. building programme at Senate House is in its early phases. There should be minimal disruption to the ESSE Conference, but the Institute apologises that furnishings and paintings have been removed from the public rooms and conference spaces in the Senate House South Block (which contains the central social space for the Conference). Work is under way on the refurbishment of the heating system, and we would ask you to take extra care in the vicinity of radiators from which the travertine covering panels have been removed. A minor detour is necessary around the building site in the rear car park when you make your way from the Beveridge and Chancellor's Halls to Seminar and Panel sessions in Stewart House. The North Block (where further Seminars and Panels are located) is not affected.

The Institute's staff will be available at the Information Desk to assist you at all times. We wish you a happy and productive Conference, and a splendid stay in Bloomsbury.

With all best wishes,

Warwick Gould
Chair, ESSE-8
