Writing Equipment Society 30th Anniversary Meeting
Saturday 2 October 2010
Hosted by the Museum of Writing and the Institute of English Studies
In recent years the Writing Equipment Society has established a pattern of holding a meeting in London on the day before the London Writing Equipment Show; this year is no exception. However, since this year is our 30th anniversary, the meeting will be exceptional and one not to be missed.
The meeting will be held on Saturday, 2 October 2010 in the Senate House of the University of London and is a joint meeting with the University's Museum of Writing. As well as hearing outstanding speakers, there will be the opportunity to see an exhibition of items from the Museum. This is rare opportunity as the Museum does not yet have permanent exhibition space.
Dr. Irving Finkel - Assistant Keeper, Department of the Middle East, British Museum.
Dr Finkel is in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on clay tablets, which involves reading and translating all sorts of inscriptions and working with children and adults to promote greater familiarity with the ancient Middle East. He specializes in ancient Mesopotamian medicine and magic, and is interested in the history of board games throughout the world. He also has appeared frequently on television and has written numerous books, both academic and for children.
Professor Michelle Brown - Professor of Medieval Manuscript Studies at the Institute of English Studies, University of London. Professor Brown was Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library and has held many important roles connected with medieval manuscripts, a subject on which she is a world renowned expert and has written many titles and made numerous appearances on television. Among her many other duties, she is Lay Canon and Member of Chapter, St Paul's Cathedral and Chair of Lincoln Cathedral Library Board.
Dr. Geoffrey Roe - retired Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester University. Dr. Roe is, of course, best known to WES members as Geoff Roe, our esteemed President.
