Areas of expertise include Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature, Romanticism, Eco Criticism, and history of theatre. Professor Bates' publications include Shakespeare and Ovid (1993), the Arden edition of Titus Andronicus (1995), The Genius of Shakespeare (1997), a study of Wordsworth and the origins of environmentalism, Romantic Ecology (1991), and a novel about William Hazlitt, The Cure for Love. His biography of John Clare was published in October 2003. Hetooke up his chair at Warwick in 2003, where he will initially be Leverhulme Research Professor of English Literature.
