About Non-Stipendiary Visiting Research Fellowships
The Institute of English Studies provides an institutional base for scholars actively pursuing research in London. Throughout their period of affiliation, our Visiting Fellows can use the University of London Library at the Institute’s expense and use our name as their contact and reference point during their stay, although it is not possible for the Institute to offer a room to such scholars. The Institute is the lead institution for the Centre for Manuscript and Print Studies and its activities may be of benefit to fellows during their time here. All the Institute requires is a report from the Visiting Fellow at the end of the stay in order to show the benefit and results of the Fellowship. Experience suggests that the scheme sometimes assists those seeking sabbatical leave from their own home institution. An opportunity will be found, if possible, for a fellow to present a paper at the end of his/her stay. There is no restriction as to the period or subject matter, and all topics within the area of English Studies, the History of the book, Palaeography, Bibliography and Textual Scholarship will be considered. Applicants are requested to note, however, that awards are rarely made in the area of modern or applied linguistics. The duration of the Fellowship is not normally less than one month or more than 12 months. Extensions of the Fellowship (up to 12 months) must be formally approved and requests must be made in writing.

To apply for a Non-Stipendiary Visiting Research Fellowship, please download, complete and return the Application Form [download word document, 31kb] or [download PDF document, 145kb] along with a C.V. listing your publications and any academic credentials. Please also ask two referees to write independently on your behalf.  Applications are considered by the Academic Committee, which normally convenes during the Autumn and Spring terms.

The deadline for the next round of applications is 1 February 2012 for Visiting Fellowships to begin no later than 30 September 2012.  Applicants are reminded that they are responsible for ensuring that applications and all references reach us before the due date. All documents may be submitted electronically via email attachment. Incomplete applications or applications that are not conform to the guidelines will not be forwarded to the Academic Committee.

University of London Research Fellowships for academic staff in the University of London are available through the School of Advanced Study. The Fellowships are intended for academic staff in the Colleges of the University of London. They are 4-month appointments, designed to provide relief from teaching and administration in order to give academic staff dedicated research time not otherwise available to them within the research leave arrangements of their College.
