A Scandinavian scribe and Jerusalem: Pseudo-Hegesippus in recently identified fragments in Copenhagen

Two modest-looking fragments in the Royal Library in Copenhagen represent the only known Norwegian-made copy of the fourth-century Latin redaction of Flavius Josephus’ The Jewish War attributed to Hegesippus. Despite the fragments’ location in Denmark, the hand was last year identified as that of the Benedict-scribe, a Trondheim scribe active in the decades before and after 1200. Why would a text about events in Jerusalem more than a thousand years earlier interest a Norwegian reader? How does the work of Pseudo-Hegesippus relate to the other books from the scribe’s hand? The lecture will address matters of methodology, as well as the relationship between the fragments and their historical context.
