2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the publication of Dickens and Women – a detailed, meticulously researched account of the women who figured significantly in the life of Charles Dickens alongside his characterisation of women in the novels. Although Birkbeck College held a Dickens Fest in honour of Professor Michael Slater upon his retirement in 2001, it seems a fitting moment now for the Dickens Fellowship to celebrate his extraordinary contribution over many decades to Dickens Studies.

Professor Michael Slater past editor of the Dickensian, President of the Dickens Fellowship and Chairman of the Trustees of the Charles Dickens Museum. His monumental Yale book, Charles Dickens (2011), is the best modern scholarly biography of Dickens. Michael’s editing career includes the magnificent four-volume Dent edition of Dickens’s Journalism, as well as editions of Dickens’s novels and Christmas Books, and general editorship of the Everyman Paperback Dickens. He has been a stalwart of the Fellowship, giving talks and readings to branches all over the world and contributing regularly to its annual conference. His contribution to Dickens Studies is immense and was recognised in his award of MBE in 2014 for ‘services to literary scholarship’.

The event is free of charge and hosted by the Dickens Fellowship. Attendance is only available online via Zoom
