Abstract:

We often consider fragments of medieval manuscript books as the last remaining portions of long-lost codicological units. And yet the very existence of those fragments depends not just on choices made by early modern bookbinders, but on the politics of institutions that subsequently hosted them in their adopted book bindings. Starting with an exploration of two little-known fragment collections from an English medieval cathedral library and a Spanish university library dating back to 1218, this talk will explore the ways in which the two corpora (and their typologies) were shaped by dynamics inherent to the different institutions that ended up hosting them.
