This seminar is hybrid, held in-person and online via Zoom.
Abstract:
This paper explores the writing, production, and use of relic labels in the early medieval West. These minute tags were originally attached to, or wrapped around, small bundles containing holy matter from saints or holy places, making them essential tools for the management of relic collections preserved in ecclesiastical institutions.
Drawing on the work of the Crafting Documents project, we will discuss the remarkable range of scripts and writing agents they embody, and the methodologies devised for their study as both textual and material artefacts.
