Kyle Roberts (Executive Director, Congregational Library and Archive in Boston, Mass.): 'Sermons in the Subscription Library: A Digital Approach to Reconstructing Eighteenth-Century Anglo-Atlantic Religion.'
This talk explores the acquisition and reception of religious works by social subscription libraries in the UK and North America through the new AHRC-funded Libraries, Reading Communities and Cultural Formation in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic project. Aspiring to encompass all surviving eighteenth-century English-language library catalogues and borrowing registers, this new digital resource allows scholars to explore the reception of works by Anglican, Dissenting Protestant, and Catholic authors across time and space. Important new trends emerge about religious reading by looking at these underutilized sources.
