A message for those working in English Studies. You will be all too aware that this is an extremely difficult time for colleagues in English studies across the sector. Some of these stories have received a great deal of publicity; others have not. Over the last 12 months the English Association, the Institute of English Studies and University English have collaborated in working directly with a number of departments.
We can offer advice and support; and we can connect you to a network of willing colleagues across the discipline with senior management experience, or experience of fighting threats to their own departments. In particular we are keen to advise on ways to make a positive and constructive case for the value and significance of what you do. Because of the risk of adverse impact on internal negotiations, our standing policy is not to comment on ongoing situations publicly, except in those cases where we have been specifically invited to do so by the relevant department head. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to raise anything with us. Anything you say will be treated in the strictest confidence.
