Elizabeth Crawford: 'Collecting the Suffragettes'

From printed speeches to ‘Votes for Women’ soap, the British women’s suffrage movement of the 19th and early-20th century offers scope to collectors of every taste and medium. In this talk I’ll demonstrate, with many illustrations, how political commitment was made manifest in a vast range of artefacts, some only surfacing now, a hundred years after the first granting of the parliamentary  vote to women. Surely no other political campaign has been so ingenious, offering collectors the possibility of expanding their historical horizons, as well as the promise of much entertainment.
