Dr Charlotte Rudman
Early Career Research Fellow

Profile
Charlotte has recently completed the Early Career IPE Fellowship (2023-24) at SAS with a project entitled ‘Capturing Medieval London: Framing and Perspective’, which uncovered some of the remaining material fragments of medieval London through both photographic history and contemporary photographic practice. Through archival research and collaborative engagement, the project resulted in a community photo trail around medieval London with an accompanying online exhibition, details of which can be found alongside a critical reflection here: (https://ies.sas.ac.uk/blog/capturing-medieval-london-a-trail). This research is the foundation of Charlotte’s current book project, ‘Capturing the Medieval City’, a study of how the multilayered temporality of cities can be revealed in new ways through photographic work. Charlotte received her PhD from King’s College London in 2022. The work examined Chaucer’s knowledge of the science of sound in his dream vision and dream vehicle poems, arguing that Chaucer’s scientific knowledge of echo and motion were key to his construction of dreams. With a particular interest in radio, she has appeared on a special programme for BBC Radio 4 entitled A Dream Vision for Our Times, contributed to The Early Career Researcher Podcast, and co-hosted ‘Footnotes’ for KCL Radio, an ECR collaborative podcast. She has taught on modules across the Middle Ages at KCL and published her own poetry with The Still Point, The Royal Society of Literature and in Glean & Graft, an anthology from Fresher Publishing.
