Why study with us?

The IES occupies a position at the centre of the academic study of English in the United Kingdom. A vibrant, interdisciplinary research culture is fostered within the IES, and more broadly within the School of Advanced Study, which provides a unique configuration of academic resources for postgraduate research.

The Institute of English Studies is located in Senate House, in the heart of Bloomsbury. We are located moments away from the British Library, the British Museum and of course Senate House Library.  As part of the MA/MRes in the History of the Book, students have had classes in St Bride Foundation, Senate House Library, the National Art Library at the V&A, Lambeth Palace Library, and the National Gallery. There are more opportunities to explore other libraries and the book trade with the integrated internship module.

Investing in your future

Many History of the Book alumni have gone on to pursue PhD study at the Institute or other Universities, and have also gone into positions at cultural institutions and the book trade.
